Purolator partners with 4Refuel to implement renewable diesel and reduce CO2 emissions in key markets across Canada

As a strategic partner to Purolator for fuel supply and mobile on-site refuelling, 4Refuel is now delivering renewable diesel to Purolator operations in key markets as part of Purolator’s commitment to reduce its emissions and lower its impact on the environment.

The adoption of low-carbon biofuels within Purolator’s operations is an effective action, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions without requiring substantial investments in new equipment and infrastructure.

Renewable diesel, also known as hydrogenated-derived renewable diesel (HDRD), is a biofuel that is chemically identical to diesel. HDRD can be used as a drop-in ready fuel to convert conventional diesel vehicles in commercial transportation fleets, such as Purolator’s, to low-carbon alternatives. It is an effective solution, available today, that can support Canadian decarbonization initiatives within the transportation sector.

Purolator is now fuelling their heavy-duty vehicles with renewable diesel at multiple locations across their operating network, including:

  • Richmond, Burnaby and Port Kells, British Columbia (Launched May 2023)
  • St. Laurent, Boucherville, Dorval and Laval, Quebec (Launched May 2024)
  • Greater Toronto Area, Ontario (Launched June 2024)

“Our partnership with 4Refuel has allowed us to make significant progress toward our 2030 science-based emissions reduction goals. Transitioning from diesel to renewable diesel is an important tool in our decarbonization strategy and roadmap and we look forward to continuing this journey with the support of 4Refuel,” said Cindy Bailey, Corporate Sustainability Officer, Purolator.

“We have an important role to play at 4Refuel, in supporting our customers with a stable and reliable supply of low-carbon alternatives across Canada. Purolator's progressive adoption of renewable diesel has allowed us to further improve our poly-fuel approach and steadfast commitment to helping our customers achieve their decarbonization goals,” said Lauren Foulkes, Sr. Director Sustainability, 4Refuel.

Fueling with renewable diesel contributes to Purolator's overall decarbonization roadmap and serves as a prime example of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The conversion of these Purolator sites to renewable fuels is forecasted to replace an estimated 25 per cent of Purolator's total diesel on an annual basis. This is a vital achievement in helping Purolator reduce its operational carbon footprint across Canada and expanding fuel technology beyond fossil-derived fuel products.
